Default Will the XJ ever be worth "gold"?

So I've been browsing through craigslist like I typically do, looking at any good deals for jeeps. What I've noticed, is that there are about 5 to 10 xjs listed at any time, but they are way above value. This is only recently that I've noticed. You have a stock 93 with 250k and the person has it listed for $4500. Or a 97 that's modded to hell, body looks decent, and its listed for $8500. There is also one currently that the guy has listed for $2000 and it has no motor. Most say things in the ad like "has the legendary 4.0" or "very rare 5 speed transmission". Like seriously? That adds 3 or 4k to the value?

All the above examples are absurd. There are plenty of xjs still on the road. But is there a time when you guys think an xj will garner what a TJ or yj does currently? 10 more years? When there are only a certain number left? Never?

I think the XJ was produced in such a high quantity, that it'll never be worth all that much. It'll just remembered as a damn great vehicle, but nothing really "collectable". I just think there could be a debate because some of the ones in my area that are way overpriced seem to sell fast. The ad gets taken down within 5 or something days. Now maybe someone talked them down quite a bit, but probably not likely.

Any thoughts?

The xj won't ever be worth anything until they're not around anymore. Cherokee guys love cherokees for the fact that they are so plentiful and relatively easy to maintain. There were wayyyyyyyy to many xj's produced for them to be collectable. I'll be buried with mine

Yes I agree. But cherokee guys know what they are worth, and they aren't worth much. They mod and add to their XJ because they love it so much. Not because it's a valuable vehicle.

But what about the non cherokee guys? How many threads do we see on here that start off as "hi I'm new here and I just bought my first jeep for xxxxx...blah blah it needs this what do I do?" And we just shake our heads at the price they paid before answering their question? Or the xjs at dealerships for close to 10k or more? They sell for that price because people that don't know just look and see "jeep" and they think it's so cool and valuable.

Very easy to do. Someone unknowledgable will probably buy it.

Just depends where you live and whats all done to the jeep.A nice rust free xj in a rust belt state can bring some money.Or you get a person that don't know better and sees a xj lifted big tires all the off road goodies and think they got a deal on it at 10k.The highest price i seen here was 6k for a 01 super low miles and super clean.

Seller is more than likely in debt up to their eyeballs. Just trying to dump it before the repo guy shows up. The absolute best ads on CG are the ones which state "don't have to sell". lol.

I just sold the 2000 in my avatar for $1700. 212k, mechanically sound decent interior with minor rust, nothing structural. Decent looking and working. I was happy with the $1700. Yeah there are lots out there overpriced. You just have to weed through them.

Not only Jeep owners, the figures are staggering:
"The average U.S. household with debt carries $15,675 in credit card debt and $132,158 in total debt."

What's the other choices for a solid axle off road 4x4?

JKs are now starting to be 10 years old and 100-150k miles. Their auto trans is junk and the 3.8 is worn out at that kind of mileage. And they are still expensive. They are more computer controlled and less adaptable to mods like engine and trans swaps, etc.

TJs are expensive with the wrangler tax. Auto trans is junk. Small, 2 doors, soft top.

XJ auto are good trans, engines can last 200-300k, tons of cheap spare parts, simple, even crank roll up windows. Good body from the sun belt is worth it.
What can you buy similar for under $5000?
4 doors, hardtop, secure, easy to work on.
From stock to wild builds.
I have seen a slow up tick in price over the last few years.
The XJ can last 50 years if it doesn't rust out, it can be rebuilt 3 times over.

That cash for clunkers drove the price of the XJ up. It was the 4th most traded in vehicle. To be destroyed. I doubt there were many Wranglers traded in. Stock rust free XJs are becoming rare and there price will continue to grow.

when i was looking to buy mine I had a guy tell me i was "out of line" for offering $1700 for a stock 00 with "minor overheating issues" (more than likely cracked head) according to him "it has 125k miles and no rust" but I live in AZ so rust free XJ's are a dime a dozen pretty much nothing rusts down here lol.
