I was in high school in '93 when the zj was released. Back then I always though if it as a luxury class type of vehicle. At least higher end. In '94 I was working at McDonald's and a zj was one of the prizes for like the monopoly or something. I can remember reading the poster and it said valued at like $27,000 or $25,000 or something and at the time that amount of money was a lot. It came with leather and all the bells and whistles.

XJ vs ZJ -
When I was 16 (1981) I wanted an AMC AMX.
An older fella I worked with was a die hard AMC, but "family man"
He was trying to convince me to buy a Gremlin, said it was the same car under the skin. No way in hell I was going to be seen in a Gremlin, I wanted a javelin or AMX.
I got my Javelins and AMX's.
But later realized he was very correct. Under the skin, the Gremlin and AMX/Jav shared much of the unibody structure, engines, trans, rears, etc.

Kinda the same with the XJ and ZJ

depends. Alot of grands have different engines, trans, transfer case, coils all around. In most cases under the skin it isn't really the same. Although yes the same concepts, but that can be said for a lot of vehicles.

It may not be well known but the 1993 Grand Cherokee was originally going to be the new Cherokee. The ZJ was going to replace the XJ. The XJ was still selling so well Chrysler decided to make both naming the ZJ the Grand. Additionally, the majority of the design of the ZJ had been done by AMC before Jeep being acquired by Chrysler.
