Default Who is right?

My buddy and I are having an argument. I say that 1 turn of a bolt is a full 360° turn. He says that it's 1 swing of the ratchet (i.e. About 45°).

I want you all to settle it. So who's right?

1 turn = 360 degrees.
Range of motion of wrench/ratchet is not a standardized unit of measure.

agree on the 360° turn.

A lot of things that require light amounts of torque, you turn them "1/4" turn, which would be a 90° turn, if you went off your buddies idea, it would be 10.25° and bolts would be falling out all over the place.

Tell your buddy to just stop and think about it for a moment, the only answer is 360* be it wrench or ratchet.

We were discussing an issue involving having to back a bolt off from a set amount of pressure. The bolt had to be tightened to 50 in-lbs then backed off 4 turns.

Four turns is an awful lot, especially for a coarse thread bolt.

Are you sure they didn't mean four flats?

I looked up the specs again. Tighten to 72 in-lbs then back off 4 turns. It's for a 04 laredo trans. 42re transmission clutch bands to be precise.

Here's the link

Following is the only acceptable deviation where manuals or instructions are concerned.
1 turn = 360 degrees unless otherwise noted.
