Where should a man who is saving his pennies with a 246K Cherokee start if he wants to strap it in the for the long haul? My brother keeps telling me to just sell it, as does my dad, but I just like the thing too damn much.

What should I start replacing etc.?

Because if I start putting money into cosmetic things, and it grenades... waste of money. They want me to sell it because "it's already got 246K on it, so why not sell it and get a newer one to start customizing?"

Well, just keep it from grenading. Not hard with the 4.0

Keep up on maintainence and your good. Like said, fix what breaks.

Even if the engine does poop out. Swap it! Plenty of donors at the JY.

Lol, at 246,000 miles, it's just starting to get broke in. The 4.0 and aw4 are dog-gone near bulletproof. Check all your fluids. Do your basic maintenance. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to roll it over 400,000 miles.

The oil. Keep up on routine maintenance and that 4.0l will outlast you. Also keep up on tranny, TC, and axle fluids.

As for the rest maybe look into replacing bushings. At that mileage they're prolly pretty worn. Make sure everything is properly greased. Then, like everyone else has said, just fix things as they break (and they will). When people ask why I love having and old high mileage jeep I tell them spending $100 every few months to fix something if it breaks is still better than a car payment.

Alright, that sparks another question - few months back I dropped the pan (thank god there was no grit/shavings) filled it up, but I can still never get a clear reading on the stick. I've added a little, looked again.. little to no difference. It runs fine, shifts fine, but how the hell am I supposed to get a good measurement?!

Engine oil or trans fluid?

Trans fluid, the oil is all good, especially after the valve cover gasket replacement

For the trans you have to check it while running with the trans in nuetral after its reached operating temp.

That's the weird part, I do both of those things and it gives me a ****ty reading. I don't wanna over fill it because that will prolly end badly.

What exactly do you mean ****ty reading?

If it never shows like it has enough and you keep adding, than shurely it has a leak somewhere.

I meant park not nuetral. Check in Park. Its how its supposed to be checked and then you also won't need the park brake.
