I just encountered the same prob. traced it to the air intake on the engine side of the firewall. There is a crappy foam gasket where the HVAC box mates up to the hole in the firewall where the blower goes. The foam had deteriorated. I removed the pass seat, peeled back the carpet and poured a cup of water in the blower area...water poured in immediately. My fix was to slop a little blue RTV at the mating joint between the firewall and the hvac box. heres a pic. note...i DID say 'slop'. heh. prob coulda made it look better, but the reach is a little tricky. This is a 2000 xj, I know yours is a little different, but the concept should be the same. Hope this helps.

I also slathered RTV at the mating joint on the inside as well...but not until after I confirmed the leak was stopped outside the cab. I then wire-wheeled the pass floor pan and sprayed it with some Cold Galvanizing Compound I had laying around. Vac'd the water, put a fan on it overnight and put it all back together. Anyway...as I said, hope it helps. Sean

Yes. On the passenger side firewall...in the engine compartment near the hood prop and just below the cowl. You will see a circular object protruding through the firewall, about 8" diameter. Thats your blower fan. You can test it for leaks by pouring a cup of water on it. First, pull your carpet back so you can see the floor pan, then pour the water against the firewall and go check your floor.

Another thought...make sure you apply the sealant at the junction between the hvac box and firewall...not solely or necessarily where the fan bolts to the hvac box.
lastly, you might want to take out your pass seat, prop up the carpet and put a fan on it for a while...as you know, our floor pans aren't exactly galvanized...heh.
i hope this is where your leak is located...easy fix and FREE!
good luck bud.

if you have AC, it will be near the accumulator... this:

your blower should look like this:
Blower Motor 1.jpg
there is a seal where the blower housing enters the firewall. that seal was causing the leak on mine. we had a bunch of rain yesterday and its bone-dry this morning.
take a pic of yours, i'll try to help.
