Define "basic," because gearing and diff work short of changing oil has long been constituted as "difficult." Even most shops hire out to have a gear guy do differential work. There is a lot of knowledge you have to know when tinkering with your differential, which requires an understanding of different properties of a differential and having the proper tools to ensure proper alignment/backlash/preload/etc..

Ahah – much less complicated than a true locker. I never really took the time to tell the difference between one of these and the controllable locker.

1. Selectable. Fully replaces the carrier. Requires complete disassebly of different innards. Example: OX, ARB, Eaton

2.Lunchbox Autolocker. Only requires the removal of the spider gears. Can be done in a an hour without special tools. Example: Spartan or Aussie.

3. Full case auto locker. Just like a lunch box locker but significantly stronger. Completely replaces the carrier but is not selectable. Detroit locker is a good example.

TXJGuy Very fine idea. Tough choices to navigate but so far Torsen Tru Trac or possibly detroit T T ,tho I don't know enough yet. It's becoming a blurr as it all begins to run like water colors. Important stuff to know. Thank you.

You just need some extra traction and you're not gonna beat the rig, right?

That's about the size of it. My road does enough beating all by itself if I don't keep it under 7 or 8 mph going up or down.
