I've driven in snow exactly once with my XJ. I live in the South East, so we don't get much snow. When it does snow, most of it melts after a week or so of being ice on the road. Not many plows. I went out playing and experimenting.
If the roads are icy/slushy I leave it in 4H. Otherwise, 2H. No adverse affects to the jeep, and it handled great. I am highly inexperienced in the snow, so for me to say it handled great in the snow is saying something.
BTW... Hoping it snows at least once this year so I can go play with the jeep. It's 70 outside today. LOL.

I will say this, My first Cherokee had all season tires on it. It was fair in the snow in 2wd and really good in 4wd. Then I bought a set of real, honest to Harry, winter tires, yanno, the ones with the mountain and snowflake symbol on them. They were almost brand new while being 10 years old.
The ability of these tires took me by surprise. 9.5 inches of unplowed snow and I drove up the steep hill by me without breaking a sweat. 4wd of course.
A second set of wheels and true winter tires for me from now on!

I have to be honest (too)... I personally hate snow and freezing my a** off.....but.... when I get to "play" in it in my XJ.... that makes me happy
Today was really the first time I got to test out the 4wd on mine since I got it a month(ish) ago... now I see what all the hype is about with these babies first hand... and have to admit, makes me feel like I'm driving a stomper around. kinda like this...
and it's fun as! handles a lot differently than my previous 4x4's in the deeper snow.

i live in northern canada. we gets a lot of snow, lots out there now.
i use 4x4 almost always in winter. all my jeeps are 231 also. i just slip it out of 4hi if there's a long dry patch, but have forgot many times and all is well.
just take it out of 4wd when in dry parking lots and you will be fine.
as for dedicated winter tires, up here they are a must, studded if you can afford the extra cash. mud tires are as good as slicks in the winter. a/t's are better, but still not as good as actual winter tires.

Everyone says mud tires don't do good in the snow, but I have ran mud tires for the past 5 years and they have done just fine in the snow. I guess it all depends on what tread pattern it is there are dozens of different MT tread designs.

The only problem with mud tires is they don't stay soft like snow tires. To fix this drop a few psi of air and done.
