When do you consider a XJ to be modified?
Technically as soon as you change anything to something that isn't OEM it has been modified, yet I have lifted my 98 3", and put slightly larger tires on it and I don't really consider my XJ modified because the rest of it is bone stock. Maybe once I start doing performance upgrades like lockers, good shocks, bumpers, and big tires I will start to look at it as being a modified Jeep. Till then I see my XJ and sitting on the fence between modded and stock. This my opinion on my XJ, but I was wondering how other people feel about it and when a XJ makes the leap from OEM to a modded XJ.

I would consider it "lightly modified" with a 3" lift, because technically speaking it is. I'm not sure I understand your point because you answered your own question in your post.

I guess my XJ will never make the grade in your books
Maybe I worded the original post wrong, but you are missing the point. It is not a is my XJ modded thread, I know it is ever so slightly. I was more asking when do you consider an XJ modded. What, to the reader, is that imaginary line to to cross into a truly modded Jeep?
Mine will never make into the wildly modded XJ class with 1 tons and 37" tires. I want to keep it DD friendly, yet more than capable of what I would put it through. I hate getting stuck, and am a bit of a loner, so over built is better than walking out to find help
I think the most I will ever go is 33" tires, maybe another 1-1.5 inches of lift and cut fenders, a front winch bumper and beefier rear bumper. Lockers are in the future as well, and probably before I do any other mods, followed by the winch and front bumper.

Whenever it is modified to something different than stock. It doesn't have to be lifted, it could be lowered. There used to be a few guys who race XJs on here and those were slammed to the ground with engine modifications... I would consider them modified. I would not consider replacing worn out stock components with stock components as modifying it but anything that changes the stock parameters definitely is!
