Ok so here is an example of two completely different driving styles. I am driving the XJ (obviously) and my buddy Bob is driving the CJ5. It is also a good comparison between having lockers and being open/open. Check em out and tell us how you drive.

not a good comparison IMO, wheelbase is a factor there as well as the fact it sounds like the 5 has the high geared 3spd trans (t-90) need to compare an open/open XJ to yours for a decent comparison.
oh and my driving style changes, i drive however the terrain says i need to.

yeah im more with you on the driving style, now if i had another xj to just strictly wheel, then there would probably be more hammer down driving haha

I mostly try to wheel like #1... for safety and longevity of parts and my spine. Occasionally it looks a little closer to #2 but no where near that aggressive.... he actually bent that spring?! yowza....

The XJ makes it look really painful - but I'd never hammer mine like the dude in the YJ. I pretty much let the terrain dictate my wheeling style. I find that mud likes throttle (& I hate mud ... but that's another thread). Large rocks should be walked unless you need to bump it a bit. Hill climbs require steady throttle, not too slow, not too fast, but you need to know how it ends at the top. A lip might require you to hammer it & bump it. I have 2 vids on You tube with my XJ & a TJ doing the same hill. He never made it after several tries, whereas I kept steady throttle and hopped over the lip the first time. IIRC he was on 35s open/open I was on 32s open/limited slip.

My open diff leads me to drive somewhat like the CJ5. But not quite as aggressive. I prefer to drive like the XJ driver, but often must hammer it to keep going.

I let the terrain dictate the driving style, but crawling is where it's at for me. No offense to your friend, but in that video, the guy's a friggin' idiot. You're just asking to bust up parts when you wheel like that. It doesn't require offroad skill to mash the throttle and abuse your rig.
