Cannot find kerosene anywhere on Long Island except Home Depot at $12 a GALLON! Last year I could get K1 at Hess, OK and some other gas retailers for about $4.50 a gallon. None of them have it this year and if asked they have no info. Not even Agway. Gonna cost me a fortune to work in my garage this winter. Uggh.

Here's what blows my mind:

It's easier to refine kerosene, which means it costs less money for them to do so, yet they can charge such an exorbitant amount for it. I think that many people no longer use it, so they charge what they want for it. I agree with SteveM. An IR propane heater would be cheaper and safer to use. I have 2 of the tank-top mounted IR heaters, one single burner and a dual burner, used them a lot when I lived in CO...and that dual burner, I had to shut that thing off on occasion, it got way hot...and the burners aren't terribly expensive, and propane is readily available and costs a lot less than kerosene. $0.02

We have oil heat in the house and I had to do some research on alternatives in a pinch last year.
Just pulled this up. There are options.

I spent 4 years working in a cold storage on the fish pier in Gloucester ma. The blast units (where we froze fresh fish) ran about -40 to -60 Fahrenheit, the actual freezer was about -10.
We had "mr. Heater" propane heaters on the dock so the bosses wouldn't freeze to death when they had to leave their cozy offices. They definitely generate a lot of heat.

If you live near a small airport Jet-Fuel (Jet-A, DO NOT use JP-4) is just highly-refined Kerosene.

I do have a propane but not an ir. My experience has been that I can run way longer on $25 of kerosene at $4.50 a gallon then 1 one 30lb propane at about the same price. However, availability and ir could change that whole equation. Will they actually sell Jet fuel to the public? There is an airport near me.
