33's look really good on a 3.5" lift. The only problem you may have is that you'll need to re-gear with the 33's. You might not have to but I've heard most people do eventually.

If you're not going to change gears go with 31's. You'll still notice the engine lugging a little but not as bad as it would with the 33's.
If you're changing gears, 33's w/at least 4.56's. JMO

With 3.5 inches of lift your best bet is to go with 31 inch tires. Anything bigger and you'll have to mess with cutting the fenders and re-gearing your axles.

I notice no lugging and almost no performance difference between the stock tires and 31s. Friend has 32s and no re-gear and only a bit of lugging. 32s would be fine, 33s will work until you get tired of the sluggishness enough to re-gear, but the 33s will require quite a bit of trimming to fit. 32s just a bit of trimming, 31 should fit under factory flares. Get the tires you want with the amount of trimming you are comfortable with- it is your Jeep, and even with 32s XJs still have plenty of power (it is a Jeep, not a race car!)- provided your drivetrain is in good condition. With 31s and stock engine I can still spin the tires on pavement and have to try not to when wet. :-)

You can go bigger than 31s with a 3 inch lift. It can be done. many guys on here have proven that. A newbie starting out should start out with 31 though. Once said newbie gets a little smarter about their XJ then they can makethe call to cut their fenders or lift higher when they get the bug for bigger tires. If you go bigger than 31s with a 3 inch lift the tires WILL rub and then at that point you will have to make the choice probably before you have the funds to do anything but, cut the fenders. So, be smart about it and make the right choice for you.

you can fit 33's if you trim. on stock gears 33's might be ok for a while but you will probably start to notice a difference.

for comparison
