So far in the XJ I have just a 20' ****** strap, Rear hitch tow hook, and shackles on the front.

Now in my HD I have a shackle hitch, 30' ****** strap, two 12' 3/8 chains, spare shackle, 12' tow strap, and more.

I had over 200' of strap and chain laid out one time pulling my buddys sunk Ram 1500 with the Chevy, only solid ground was way up on a hill.

I need a winch on the XJ!

Sounds like the strap and the ****** block are both good buys. Keep them clean and dry and they should give you good service for many years.
Get yourself a couple of 3/4 inch shackles and you'll be good to go. [ 3/4 shackles are rated at 9500 lbs so I wouldn't go smaller. ]
Good luck with the winch and accessories.

I should probably get a winch at some point, currently have a 20(?) foot chain with 2 sizes of hooks and a Torin Hi-Lift Jack, and a length of rope.

Saved my friends crv using the Hi-Lift as a comealong jack once.

Please get proper recovery gear and throw the chain out.

X2. Chain is good for draggin a downed tree or somethin like that, but should never be attatched to a rig for recovery. And rope you have ain't even worth smokin if its not a bubba rope.

You may have pulled dozers with chains, but you may have good luck. All it takes is one time to use a chain and it may be yours or someone else's last time. Chains do more damage when they brake. Straps don't. So using straps is for yours and people around you safty.
