Question What recovery gear are you using?

I just aquired a 9500 synthetic Rough Country winch for my XJ. I need to start obtaining some good recovery equipment. I have my winch, a good ****** strap (10,000 lb Ericson i believe), shackles front and back. I would like a couple tree straps and ****** blocks. I would also like a couple of the rubber connectors for tying two straps together when i need to. In the meantime, i will use a towel to connect them together.

I see that alot of people use a shackle to attach winch to a tree strap. I really wanna eliminate any heavy metal from the recovery process if possible. I just worry that a tree strap could snap, bringing a shackle my way via super speedy delivery.

So, three questions really:
  1. What equipment do you suggest/ use for recovery?
  2. Where can i find rubber cinch bones (i know i saw them somewhere on here, but can't find)?
  3. Is there another way to attach winch line to ****** block/ tree strap other than clevis/ shackle?
Thanks in advance!

Since you have synthetic line i wouldnt think the shackle would fly towards you. If the tree strap breaks it would probably drop with the winch line. If the winch line breaks it would snap back to the tree. Just my thoughts could be wrong though.

Use shackles to connect straps together and for using a ****** block.

Synthetic line will simply fall to the ground if it breaks, you'll be safe.

Take care of your straps and tree savers and breakage won't be a problem.

Clean and inspect your straps regularly and if they start showing fraying replace them, and you'll be fine using shackles on all your straps.

I put a coat or coveralls over the cable everytime I winch. Ive snapped a line before and it just dropps to the ground, no recoil. I also have a bubba rope in my recovery gear. I had two powerstrokes yankin on me to get me out of a swamp lake bed of muck and both of em together couldn't break it. I also have a small shovel, this has saved me. For a tree strap I use straps from work for moving bar steel with a crane, these work great.

I just cant come to grips with putting 5 lbs of steele inside of a recovery situation. Winch to ****** block to tree strap - i think is ok since i have synthetic. But to connect two straps together w/ clevis i think would be asking for trouble. Recovery/ ****** straps streth up to 20%, storing energy for recovery purposes. Turning clevis into lethal missile upon one of the straps snapping. In an ideal situation, the strap will hold. But, the unknown is what kills people. I don't wanna have to post here about how my wife or one of my kids were injured or worse on this forum.

I think i will stick to this when attaching two straps:

But, thanks for the input!!!

I most certainly will watch them for fraying.

I keep my carharts in the back now. Lookin to fill a canvas duffle bag w some sand for a lil more weight. Even tho i have synthetic-safety first.

I have the utmost respect for you and your company!

No disrespect intended whatsoever.
