Yeah, anymore.
My "old" (it wasn't old back then) K-20 had massive full floating axles. But the gas mileage was horrible so I ended up trading it for a K-10. I don't recall ever having the rear end apart (not even for brakes!) but I re-did the brakes all around on a K-20 that belonged to a place where I worked. The guy couldn't figure out at first why I said that I couldn't do the work in his little narrow dugout shop, not wide enough to slide out the axles

Flanged axles like a D44 and ford 9" also keep the wheel on when you break an axle but the full float part is one of the reasons I went with my rear axle.
Yeah, I had a front wheel bearing on a pickup get dry/loose. It was weird because the noise would stop when I applied the brakes. Apparently the disc brake was holding the hub more straight while stopping.
