Now it engages first gear properly. I guess the previous owner let the tranny fluid get quite low. Not much of a surprise since it was registered non-op since 2017. It is a fun adventure getting this old 1990 Cherokee back up and running. Over 300,000 miles and purring like a kitten. Now if I could only get it to pass smog! California emissions are tough.

I've got a Rem V5 engine monitor I'm going to be selling soon. It's in good working order. Comes with the adapter for the underhood test port and a HDMI CABLE I ran through a grommet thru the left of the steering column. Instructions are included as well. This may help you smogwise. It allows you to see pretty much all of the engine parameters on our Renix models.

Started the '98 - for the 1st time since I got back from vacation in June! All it took was a new battery & some HD jump leads. Just wish I hadn't wasted more than the cost of the battery on that useless NOCO jump pack (that'll teach me to get suckered in by all the hype).

Now, I'll swap in the new battery & see if the (not so) old one will respond to a similar intensive, & prolonged, recharging program which seems to have worked on the KJ.

 

Got my calipers replaced and extended brake lines installed. The cheap extended Sunsong's on Rockauto work great.

In the past I put in a 7 inch touch screen. The Metra double din replacement dash was driving me crazy offroad so I changed out the trim clips and pretty much silenced it. I might add some rubber to get that last 1%.

 

After a long time with the Jeep not needing much attention the water pump in my '99 XJ started making a racket. Checking everything with the serpentine belt removed confirmed the problem. I ordered up a new GMB pump and heater hose pipe from Rockauto which surprisingly arrived overnight even though I had only paid for cheap shipping.

Today I tackled pulling out the old pump. There's info here and in various videos on how to do the job. There's a fair amount of disassembly but pretty straightforward. That is until it came time to actually take out the old pump. The three short bolts came out with no problem. The head of the long bolt snapped off and the pump was stuck on what was left. It took heat and pounding to get that pump off, it had obviously been on there for a real long time. Fortunately the remains of the broken bolt came out easily using vise grips. The bolt wasn't stuck in the engine block, it had just virtually welded itself via corrosion to the water pump body.

Out of time for today, will have to take a trip to the hardware store for a new bolt and install the new pump over the weekend.

Not literally today, but over the weekend.
Shop replaced clutch with a LUK kit, a National Bearing release bearing, and an O'Reilly clutch fork spring. Took a couple days and they could have communicated better.
I replaced the hydraulic master/slave assembly, it was replaced about 6 years ago with an O'Reilly lifetime warranty unit. Got a free replacement and installed myself.

Everything is smooth, seems too smooth.

Got stuck with a really high idle and had to replace the IAC valve. I think this XJ wants me to replace everything.

On top of replacing the IAC and cleaning up the throttle body I got a HF jack that can handle my new lift and a bottle buddy to go on top. I got the 12 ton which doesn't quite fit in the stock location. Would have gotten the 8 but wasn't sure the bottle buddy topper thing would work on it. There's probably a better solution but I spent enough time researching and pushing my luck without a jack.

I also bought bear spray for the XJ in case it strands me in grizzly country again.

 

Replaced O rings in 90 degree oil filter adapter.
Replaced oil and filter.

Rechecked fastener tightness on starter and clutch master/slave assembly.

Installed flexi flares on my cut fenders, decided later I’m going to cut above the pinch seam in the rear and weld in metal to seal it and redo rear flares. Then went for a short ride and found the electric locker in the 8.25 wasnt working. Checked the power at the plug was good so opened it up. Electromagnet wasn’t powering up. Ohm tested it tested good. After messing around for a couple hours finally checked the other side of the plug and found the connectors had pulled back and weren’t making contact. Fixed it silicone them in good and buttoned it all back up. What a waste of time for a 10 minute fix. So far not convinced electric is less hassle than air lockers. Time will tell.

 

Put in some ZDDP in the freshly changed oil.

A recent Dex video got me worried.
When I changed oil yesterday, there was a little metal fuzz on the magnet in the drain plug. That oil has been in there several years (was having oil analysis, everything else was fine).
