Speaking of the tensioner, I got a real nice surprise... I thought bad bearing whine was the alternator. NOPE! stupid little pulley! Last timing belt must not have had that. Swapped from the spare engine, nice and quiet, doesn't sound like a supercharged whirlygig anymore.

Did you seize the belt?
i once had a catastrophic timing belt tensioner faliure on my 97 mitsubishi montero sport.

one of the tensioners seized which caused the timing belt to melt, which caused the other tensioner and the water pump to fail before the timing belt finally snapped and bent 5 valve between 2 cylinder heads rebuilt 15k prior. some of the worst engine carnage aside from a thrown rod ive seen in person

Quote: Wow. That's three or four projects right there. I was going to do that before the frame rails fell apart. I don't think people in the south know what "inner rocker" even means haha
OOH OOH... I DO, I DO!!!! Okay, only 'cause I've cut up a jeep but still I DO, I DO!

Quote: lol.... yeah, you're probably right. I always have liked the black n white two tone on it. Just urks me that the new fenders and stuff aren't the same color white. Thanks alot, Chryco.

Noice!

Wow! I think you're right lol

Wow, you've been busy! Glad to hear you finally makin' some decent progress on it.

I think the suggestion was more so that you use it... There's a bare wire on your picture. I recommend heat shrink tubing myself, but that's just me.

Back on topic.... I finally got a new head unit to replace mine. Couldn't even turn the volume up or down on it anymore. Only thing it would do is change source and eject/play a CD.

New one is great though! Sony MEX-N5100BT

Changed it to Tron colors hehe

I did use it the next day. I wasnt sure how I wanted to set it up so i didnt finalize anything. Everything is all taped up now. I would hate to lose my jeep because something shorted out and she burned!!!

Quote: My Audi A4 was the same way. Put off the CVs, mistake. Put off the squeaky Tensioner, mistake. Selling it?

Not a mistake.
I was looking to buy an A4 last year because twin turbo, but all the ones I looked at were 30-40k past time to change the timing belt, which hadn't been done on any of them. Decided to pass since that likely meant there were other basic things that hadn't been done.

Not really a basic thing though. Its a $500+ job on a regular fwd car. Probably close to $1k on a car like that.

Lol, damn sure did, on the highway in the middle of the night.

After replacing that the next day, which no bull****, requires pulling the headlights, bumper cover, bumper support, radiator, and CORE SUPPORT ...I decided to sell it, and NEVER drive an Audi again.

Yep. Around $1k is right for the labour and parts. Officially you replace every single fastener you remove, too!

Just to change the accessory belt? **** me, that's obnoxious. Mk4 TDIs aren't THAT bad. Timing belt, you get to leave the front end on but the axle and engine mounts come out.

To replace the Tensioner, yeah. Nuts to that, never again. Tensioner in the XJ? Ten minutes, tops.
