Apparantly a PO must have done some sort of patch job with putty...

The question is do I leave that alone or cut it all out? I'm not sure yet...

I would cut it out and replace it with metal that way it'll be stronger and you won't have to worry about it.

That is what I would prefer to do. My problem is I don't have a welder and I don't have any nearby friends that do... Anybody want to load up their gear and take a road trip to South Dakota? I'll buy you booze!

What did you use to sand all the paint off? I'm going through the same pains with my cargo compartment. Found rust (again) and trying to fix things the best way that I can find without cutting the floor pan out. I attempted a few years ago, but I guess I didn't do things right because the paint has bubbled & things look worse. Mine isn't nearly as bad as yours, not rusted thru, but will be if I ignore it for maybe another year.

I'm using a 4 1/2 inch angle grinder with a 40 grit flap disc. It seems to be working okay. That's discouraging that you're dealing with this again! It makes me want to work even harder to get my rust taken care of.

I hit up the junkyard and scored some window and quarter glass, a factory CD player (moving up from my am/fm only) and a new seat bottom. my xj parts stash is slowly growing.
