straightened up my steering wheel, touched up some paint chips from the last outing and fixed/bypassed the fuel pump plug in the hope it would get rid of my engine light. Erased it, went for a drive and Grrrr 10 min into it, it came back. P0001 damn.... I don't have any secondary indications... back to the crayon board..

I run Mobil1. All the tests I've seen indicate that it's best overall unless you wanna spend $100+ for an oil change.
Mobile 1 with a top off quart of royal purple and a purilator oil filter works best. BTW, you don't have to drop all your oil every oil change. The actual oil is so refined these days that it stays stable after 3k miles. The additives are what break down and you can replenish them. Just remove and change your oil filter then top your oil with a quart of high end oil such as mentioned above... I like to add Lucas zinc additive every few months as well.Originally Posted by NewKindOfClown

Not sure tbh. Don't think its gonna blow but thought the best way to blow out carbon and such would be under load. Will do it in park tomorrow
Blow carbon... Fuel is unleaded these days, the little carbon in your engine can be cleaned out with the water in the intake trick.Originally Posted by sycoglitch

Have you had your own UOA done or are you just parrotting what you read on BITOG? The average 4.0 can't take that kind of treatment, too much gas slips by the rings. Originally Posted by silverlizzard

Why not just run a cheaper high-zinc oil in the first place? Best wear figures have been observed on Rotella T6 and Mobil Delvac 1 5w40s. As a 4.0 owner I can't be too concerned about fuel economy, so I'm going to make damn sure it runs as long as it can.

Testify. I'd rather go down some MPG if iI can get her to 300kOriginally Posted by salad

Been there done that... did my diff (including removing hubs) one time under a tarp held up by a step ladder and my work light, one grommet fit nicely over the antenna Originally Posted by XJ98sport

Today i got a call from the mechanic telling me that they need more time to fix my XJ. The CEL threw codes for misfiring cylinders 1 & 2 and all O2 sensors malfunctioning. When they checked the cylinders and sensors and found nothing wrong with them, only that the sensors werent getting any power, so they decided that it was a wiring issue and have now started taking my dash apart to find the faulty wire connected to my sensors

I strongly disagree with this.. We don't change oil because its broken down anymore. Oil is advanced enough to last a long time. We change it because it is contaminated(even the best oil in the world). Im not just talking about metal particles. Im talking about dust/sand that gets ingested via the air filter especially when using such filter as K&N. That dust gets pushed into the crank case passed the pistons with natural blowby that all engines get. This microscopic sand is just that sand and is very harmful to engines. Look at marine engines, they can go over twice the hours as land equipment between oil changes. No dust in the ocean.Originally Posted by silverlizzard

Normal oil filters don't filters 100% of harmful particulates AND when the oil is cold/thick the filter goes in to bypass mode until the oil warms up.
Ok, I could go on and on.
In a nut shell. If you don't care about keeping your engine running for a long time (trade it in after a couple years) then go for it, change the filter and top up oil. Let the next sucker deal with the consequences a few years down the road.
If you are like me and want reliability in the worse of conditions and go an other 500000km on the engine then change ALL of your oil.
Oil filters are discussed all over the place : A little clip about air filters.

The crazy-long OCI crowd loves 1-micron filters for just this reason. Really any of those contaminants CAN be filtered out. Gasoline, however, can't.Originally Posted by karl4x4

Good video by the way. I especially love the graph at the end comparing to "wet gauze filters"

Yeah, I'd buy it even if it didn't improve performance. Longevity is what Im looking for. .. Good filters, high zinc content synthetic oil and regular preventive maintenance. Originally Posted by salad

And yes, all particulates can be filtered but who has that kind of filtration system on board? Cheaper to just change the oil. .. And like you said. Gas stays in..
