If they are too weak to hold your hatch then they won't hold the hood well in winter

Why? Hatch weighs 3x what hood does. My 98' hatch would not stay up at all in the heat. One day I removed the plastic trim cover and it held up fine. Just the weight of the trim made a difference.

So the hood would be nothing for them.

Regardless of what either weighs, if you were going through the effort to do that to your hood why would you even bother with the crappy stock ones. Upgrade, fools!

The struts I used would not hold the hatch but have plenty of power to raise and hold the hood in my North Carolina winters of 40 degrees. One strut lifted and held, but 2 is more secure.
There is a strut change in 97 models. I used the longer ones from 96.

You are right but, You are missing an important part. New struts are to powerful. The hood goes up in an instant, WHAM. I learned that first hand.
There is a psi rating for them, so we can find the rating of stock and purchase new with a lower rating. So as not be a Fool. I have not bothered. Mine is working Fool-Proof.

Those struts are made by so many, all with different psi ratings. Some of the aftermarket ones are too powerful or for a different application but the length is the same so they sell it to ya.
