You will hear your intake in your vents but most don't mind the noise.

I made my own cowl intake, it's on the driver side, took it off after heavy rain and driving, only a few drops inside.
I'm going to plumb it over to the passenger side when i get the motivation.
It's been on there with no problems for to long for me to worry.
Most expensive part was the cone filter.

Try making the hole in the cowl the same size and shape as the tube or whatever is connected to is, then smooth it out. I just used a couple dif grits of sand paper I had. Also sealed it together with a layer of rtv. It took a lot of the annoying "darth vader is my passenger" noise away.
