XJs ended with the 2001 model year, while the Liberty began with 2002. Outside the US, Liberty is sold as a "Cherokee." The Commander just resembles the Cherokee more.

And as far as a jk goes they are the best jeep made now, I've lifted Prolly a hundred of them, very capable jeeps and you can fit a 35 with a little plastic trimming and a 2" budget boost, only thing I hate is the v6 they put in them

Oh wait, those are reasons I hate JKs...
Don't forget heated and cooled cup holders adjustable pedals, seat Warner's, the list goes on. Hell I might just buy a yugo for wheeling simple

There's a solid-front-axle conversion kit for the Liberty. It costs around $8k, though.

"the Jeep Liberty (KJ/KK), or Jeep Cherokee (KJ/KK) outside North America, is a compact SUV produced by the Jeep marque of Chrysler. Introduced for the 2002 model year as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. It was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs up until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. The Liberty featured unibody-construction."
