What is this
This is what I know. It's a concept vehicle from jeep. I read there is only 300 made. I can't seem to find that site anymore. It's got a 4 banger with only 7K miles on it. When I got it I was told it didn't have a vin number. I searched the thing over and found it in the engine compartment tucked away. Had it checked and showed it NEVER has been registered. The only thing they could tell by the vin is it is a Jeep and a 1986 model. Other than that it showed up as never even been produced. So the great state of Texas made me a title for it and I blew up the rear axle playing in it.
Help me identify this thing!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a Jeep Cherokee Targa from 1986. Not a lot of information on them, there was a revised edition called the "Jeep Freedom" in 1990, I think.
There is very little information on the internet about it, and only one image on a GIS, at a much lower resolution than yours. I'd be surprised if 300 were made.
Heck of a find, there. What are your plans?

I don't know who built it but it's awesome looking. Is there any extra reinforcing in the sub-frame/floor-boards/rockers? More pics would be very nice.

Wow... i hope this thing gets restored or cleaned up at least.
I never heard of the Targa.. but it did give me flashbacks of the Freedom concept.
You might want to contact Chrysler for more info on this.

A buddy needed some axles for his YJ build. I had so 44's and he had no money so we traded. I wish I had the tops! I came as it sits. Interior is trash, I'll get more pics as soon as I can.

I'll bet most of the 7K milage was put on with Manufacturer plates attached.
This does need to be covered from the elements to avoid further damage.

here is a littler history to how your jeep concept was created....
For a while jeep had been looking for a removable top sedan/suv. (yes i said sedan...)
First they came out with the xj001
then they came out with the xj002
then they came out with the xj targa (the one that you have)
then they came out with the xj freedom model:
not a whole lot of info out there on them You will have to do alot of phone calls to get info on it
btw i love the xj freedom because it had a trunk! lol and a cool one at that!
but here is some info on jeeps concepts (with photos)
