I went to open mine tonight and it popped real loud. Works just fine. I'd hit up a junk yard around you if you could. Probably your best bet, if you can go that route.

when i got my xj, the PO broke that off and had a pair of needle nose pliers that he included with the jeep lol. got a new release level and cable at the junkyard for a few bucks and worked great since.

It happened to the PO just before I bought my truck. The hardware was pretty rough as-is, so I went a different route than the people that go to the yard. I called my local racing shop and got aluminum hood pins. I removed the old twin clips, kept the center safety. I figure I don't do tons of highway driving, and if things went south, I'd see the hood start to move.

I'm also gonna weld the pins in place once I get the chance, that way the actual studs never move.

And your paint job will thank you. Just tell people the scratches were from the trail.

lol, using the pliers method just for now at least but it still amazed me of how easily it separated from the cable. Plans are to remove the old one with the new taped to the end of it so as to pull it through at the same time. thanks for the replies, shows im not the only one with this little problem happening

ive had 2 friends have the cable snap in a random spot due to to much tension when opening. ive always put white lithium grease on all of the door hinges and hood locking crap and havent had a problem, recommend you get a can of it if you dont already have some
