Default Welding Stainless Steel To Steel?

Well, can it be done? I'm a noob when it comes to welding. If it can be done, are there any special procedures aka types of welding that need to be used? (Hope this is in the correct section)

yes it can be done ive done it many times but it is not cheap

you can arc weld it using a 309 rod (not sure on pricing)

you can also mig it using 309L wire which is pretty pricey last i checked a few weeks ago it was 8.25 a pound with the smallest roll being 25 lbs
the gas you would need for this may very per welding supply company i use a gas called StainMix i forget the mix percentages but it is a mix sold by Air Gas only and works really well

any welding supply store should be able to set you up with what ever you need and probably better info then what i can give off the top of my head

I have a mig with .030 flux wire with your normal mix gas and I welded a small stainless steel CB bracket to my stock rear bumper, all I can say is have GOOD ventilation because the stainless steel puts off a toxic gas that smells like St!

on small parts this may work
but basicly your bonding to different types of material and normal wire is not compatable with stainless material so it isnt truely bonded unless you basicly burned completely through the stainless

anyway using this method will cause the weld to fracture with very little stress

when welding you should always use good ventilation (read the warning labels on your welding wire about the fumes , or any anti splatter or even the MSDS on some of the gas mixes) however ive never noticed stainless putting off bad fumes galvanized on the other hand is a different story lol

Yea I forgot to put that in there, I always use anti spatter too. But for a small Cb antenna mount it worked just fine, my bumper will fall off before the mount does

Thanks for all the responses guys. I should have put what the application is in the first post. I'm looking at welding a stainless steel catalytic converter to my exhaust system. I'm completely re-doing my exhaust on my 87 Jeep and I'm looking at the cat offered in the for sale section here, but I'm pretty sure the 2.25" cat has the exact same size pipe as what is stock after the stock system cat exhaust flange, otherwise I'd just clamp it in place.

Welding those two together will not be an issue.
