welding the rear spiders

Exactly, the spider gears are inside the ring gear carrier and are there to allow the rear wheels to turn at different speeds for smooth and quiet cornering. Welding them together simply makes the rear wheels mechanically locked together and thus spin at the same speed at all times for better traction.
