Wanting a XJ
Hello all,
I have been thinking about getting a cherokee for awhile now but didnt know where to start. I am wanting an older xj to lift and kinda have a project car. I was wondering about engine miliage and how long do they usually run. Also any other major things i need to look for when i start looking? I do not want to dump my money fixing stuff right from the start. And what am i looking at for a price range i know it varies but what is to high. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you guys...

Avoid the 84-86 model years, they have a GM 2.8 V6 that is a POS. 87-90 are good but have a quirky Renix engine management system that can take some getting use to. 91-95 are great years and use the Chrysler OBDI engine management. 96 is the last year of the first gen body style and the first year of OBDII. 96 also has a few one year only quirks. 97-99 are the best years for the second gen body style and 99 being the best year of this gen. 2000-01 are ok, but have some issues. The biggest problem is the 0331 cylinder head that is prone to cracking. These years also have a low pinion front axle. Things to look for on all model years is rust and a crusty cooling system. Look at all of the fluids and check for good color and smell. Stinky trans fluid could mean problems later. Don't be swayed by an XJ that is already lifted, go stock and lift it yourself, it's more fun that way. The 4.0 is a solid engine that will last for many hundreds of thousands of miles as long as it was cared for.

what he said. 99 is the best year. mainly because of the intake and distributor style ignition. Allthough the late 99s had cops, which is ok. they are just expensive to replace.
welcome to CF. and make sure u post pics when you get an XJ.
BustedBack... this should be a sticky.
