Yes, I am that old. The 86 XJ was still quite a new sensation at the time. It was truly amazing and did phenomenal things off road. Even with that early TC and French 5 speed. We had a blast with that car. Drove it 100K and sold it to buy a 90 XJ.
The 2.8 certainly had its problems. And I was glad to be rid of it. It was obsolete at GM and AMC took it up. Everything else was going fuel injection, and this was saddled with a goofy carb that had an electronic mixture control needle operated by the computer. FI would have been a lot simpler.
That engine went on to about 3.1 or so in the Fiero GT with fuel injection a few years later. It was quite a good runner at that stage. Too bad the XJ never saw it. It was super compact at 60 degrees rather than 90. And very short.
A few turn up in the yards these days. But not many. Most go there because the cost of smog compliance is far greater than the market value. Often with nice interiors and rust free bodies.

Thanks for the mention Brandon.
The 2.8L gets a lot of hate. Honestly, I've had my 2.8L powered XJ made fun off so many times. Those who wheel with me the first time, shut up fast. Those who've wheeled with me, will tell you some epic wheeling tale of the 2.8L of Doom! It's got mad respect in my club and with those I've wheeled with outside of my club.
FYI, 85.5+ went to a large journal crank. The majority of the failures happened with the small journal crank.
Was the grille still there?

As of Friday pretty much everything was there.
