Default turbo? supercharger?

So I think im going to turbo charge or super charge my jeep. Or both if possible. I don't know much about the jeep set up but I am current in f/I. I was wondering how to super charge or turbo charge it. I also was wondering if any engine work needs done. Also is it possible to put a diesel in my jeep? It has the 4.0 gas but I think they make a 4.0 diesel. Its an 88 Cherokee chief. Thanks for any input!

Yeah you need alot of work with either setup. New cam new pistons new distributer new injectors new plugs new fuel pump, list is pretty long..

As for diesel, yeah you can convert, but your questions on here are really open ended, you can put whatever you want on a jeep for the most part, comes down to how much money, time, and if your doing it yourself, fabrication and general auto knowledge, theirs some pretty sweet builds on here, also check out pirate 4x4.com

Haha yeah, but in my opinion, nothing is more bad a than a diesel xj, but, that comes with alot of weight issues and issues getting everything to fit in and line up right, and turbos and chargers are cool BUT there is no replacement for displacement. Stoke it out man, look into different cam setups, and make sure you got the right gears you want for how you wanna drive it, if you still want power after that, then I'd start throwin my time into turbos and stuff

The best two options for power are 4.6 stroker with a nice cam or do a chevy small block swap.Diesel the only good option is a vw diesel swap they make a adapter kit to mount one to a jeep 5 speed. But the motor mounts and all the hard stuff your on your own to make. Some will say the cummins 4bt its hard to find pricey to buy and weights 700lbs about the same as a chevy big block.

His profile looks to be a stocker so my question is why do you want power?

As for turbo vs supercharger, I would rather have a supercharger in a Jeep. Turbo lag sucks. But, for the cost to do it right, you could drop a small block Chevy V8 in it instead, and depending on the engine, could easily have more power than a supercharged 4.0.
A diesel could be swapped in too, but most diesels are heavy. The only diesel I would swap in my Jeep would be a 4BT Cummins, and it weighs 700 lbs alone. Compared to the roughly 520 lbs (I think) of the 4.0, or under 500 lbs for an aluminum small block (LS1, LS6, etc). I prefer to keep my Jeep light and nimble for wheeling, so I wouldn't swap a diesel in mine for that reason. If its just street driven and you want great fuel mileage, diesel would be great, but not a good choice for a wheeling rig imo. And lighter weight is better for performance too, if power is all you're after. So I'd say go for a Gen III GM small block. Lighter weight is better, and there's no replacement for displacement.

You could put a supercharger on for just under $1700. Gains +60rwHP and +80rwTQ.
Easy bolt-on install, and removable to be able to return to stock if needed.

Yes I saw a supercharger that was specifically made for XJs so there were no serious mods required.

I doubt this idea will come to fruition. I've never seen a twin charged 4.0 but anything is possible. IMHO It's cheaper and more reliable to do a LSX swap than FI.

Turbo > S/C hands down. If you know anything about proper trim sizing lag is a NON issue.

Yeah but if you got stock engine internals your prolly Gunna cause more harm than good with just throwin power on there like that,

There's guy just over in Idaho that does the Mercedes 4 cylinder Smokers in XJ's for around 10 to 15K. The engines are tough as nails and supposedly run for ever. They use an adapter plate that bolts right to your stock tranny. My buddy is doing his right now and was just about done when he noticed and crap ton of metal flake in the oil of the used one he bought. Turns out he's got a bad main bearing after tearing it all back out. So now he gets to rebuild it. He figured that with out the rebuild he'd would have been around 6 to 7K into the conversion. It's gonna be a beast when he gets it done.

I have 3 XJ's (2-'98 4wd, 1-'99 2wd) and I've put 2 superchargers on 150K+ engines and no problems.

how's the fuel mileage with the superchargers? and is the hp gain noticeable on the trails?
