Default Truck Recovery

well long story short, my father and a couple of his buddies went wheeling, they went down a hill that was extremely gnarly...the got to the bottom and found it made a dead end. tried to get back up, but only 2 out of 4 rigs could get up. So the most capable rig (a yota, locked front and rear, had super low gearing, winch and a few other odds and sods) went half way up to winch the two having issues, a sami and a buggie. The yota backed up next to a boulder (facing downhill) and started to winch. just as soon as that started to happen, the boulder shifted and truck kinda went over the rock, stood up on its nose, and came crashing down flipping several times. Well after a massive clusterF, the sheriff found them and air lifted the guy out 13 hrs later! even tho they had the gps coordinates and a PLB going off. So he got air lifted out, everyone else drove out in my dad's WJ. leaving the three vehicles behind...

Now we need to get them back. issue is, getting a vehicle back there is a challenge to begin with. the other thing is, the only way those things are going to get out, is by a winch. But we need longer cables to even get close to reaching them...can i just hook up two winch cables and pull? or what?

Then my second question is what do you guys think would be the best way to get the truck back up? i dont know what the current damage is besides the roof is flat, and it has two flat tires, and is upside down....i know we'll have to flip the truck back over to begin with. If you were in our situation, what would you do??

just trying to figure out our options....since right now the only thought is get a recovery company out there pay a pretty penny and have them drag it the 15+miles back to the staging area where a they can load it up to a trailer and haul it off

i dont mean to be a dick, but i would like to keep this related and realistic to my situation, $17000 in vehicles is sitting out in the desert, and i personally dont like it sitting out there with a bunch of gear...

You gotta give the peeps some slack. Besides the guy that got hurt ( hope he's doing well) the story is little funny so their gonna have a little fun. My only suggestion is get some cable and some ****** blocks and winch a ways, block the tires and winch more. It's going to take quite a while and be very tedious but it should work.

how bout a vehicle with a winch do what the yota was doing. but have another truck further up the hill attached to it. That way it doesn't go *** over tea kettle while winching. or both pull up the hill. My 02. hope it helps.

Just get some long cable, and use it like a chain.
Stretch your cable out 100% then hook the second cable to it and a third if needed.
I would suggest the last 50' be a chain or something you can shorten as needed.
Another option is how the Military pulls something out.

Hope that makes sense, and forgive the crudeness of it, I did it in a hurry.

Let me add something I forgot.
Those poles should really be driven in at an angel leaning away from the pulling force.
Good Luck,

I wouldn't attach another winch cable I would just add straps to it that way you wont fill up your spool. Another way is just use a bunch of straps run them down the hill hook to a jeep up top and the truck at the bottom and drive.

Air lift them out, or find an easyer way down the hill and drag them out that way

this might be your longshot, but you can go down to your local national guard armory and ask them if they have any recovery vehicles. some shop foremen might find this a good opportunity to teach the other guys some recovery lessons.
you cannot attach 2 winches together to pull. it will overload the stationary winch. your best option is some ****** blocks and some fiber rope. use the other vehicles in the bottom of the hill as anchors and run your rope through 2 tackle blocks per 1000lbs of vehicle. 4-5 people pulling on that rope can recover the vehicles. i know it sounds impossible, but we have done it.
to make it easier, you can have power to the wheels on the recovered vehicle.

Buy three rock bars, like you use for digging a hole in the rocky area,
They'd be best and sledge hammer and the above rig will be the anchor and a single winch will get them out of there.

No BS. just common engineering.

straps off your winch cable, but anchor the winching vehicle to a tree or a strap around a big boulder. the national guard is a good idea!!!

as caish has said, would be a good idea.
you can use an extension cable on the end of your winch cable, but be sure to use as many ****** blocks as you can. but each ****** block will slow down the speed of recovery, but will double the load rating, as long as it's a true 2 line pull or more.
tie off the winch vehicle and use another as a hold vehicle to hold the wreck until you can rehook with the pull vehicle.

it will take a lot of work and more common sense, but just be safe and stay clear of winch cables and behind the wreck when under load.
