I'd be interested to see a practical study of case strength, vibration tolerance, and shock loading. TBH I think most Jeep transfer cases blow up from driveline vibes and physical impact or other forces that aren't part of the driveline. In that respect the NP242 and NP231 in XJs are pretty much identical.

I run the 242 HD with larger chain. re-manufactured from Man-Trans. Jeep is set up for Trail/Expedition and 'Joyrides' where it is thoroughly abused.
"The rating for the 242 is from 4 Full-Time. Should be higher in other settings" from 'Novak'

I've had 'em both and abused them both for the most part the same...
My next build will have another 231 (although it will be built specifically for snow wheelin) simply due to the 2wd-Low option...
Unless I buy a 4spd Atlas

My command trac (231) equipped xj does not have 2wd lo. My old 70's c10 chevy did but I think that was a 203 or something like that. Also, does the 242 have the vc (viscous coupling) like the quadratrac jeeps do?

The NP242 uses a gear differential internally. it's the NP249 used in Grand Cherokees that has the garbage viscous coupling.
Yeah I didn't make that very clear... Like Salad said..
Most people LOVE this "aftermarket" option. Runs about $250.. for a few machined dinky parts
Biggest benefit is summertime wheeling when traction is good for those who run front lockers(no selectable).. takes a huge load off steering duties... also Pivoting on tight sloppy trails are a few.
