Transfer case or rear end?
Hello group...I have a 01 cherokee bone stock. The other day I pulled out of my driveway and went down the road to hear this horibble whine/howling noise that doesn't change when accelerating or decel. Pulled over checked everything, nothing. Jacked up the back end and found a little play maybe 1/16 inch when pulling/pushing tire in and out. Then put in in 4HI and noise was still there, 4LOW and it got much worse. Going in reverse I have no noise. I then pulled the front driveshaft out thinking its the x-case and it was half as bad. Now today I drove it again and there is no noise. All fluids are good and just changed last year. Any ideas...do I have a bad x-case? I would like some input on this before I buy one. I have the NV242 case in it too. Thanks everyone, Eric

It's most likely something to do with the front drive shaft. Either u-joints or the centering ball in the double cardan joint.

if noise is still there when you pull the shaft its not the shaft if it gets quiter without the shaft its either front end or tc.
