Transfer Case Issue/Solution
pull off the front driveshaft and see if you get the clunking sound when you drive it. If the chain brake and bunched up under the front output shaft it still might operate without the front shaft spinning and buy you enough time to get another case. Look on craigslist for cases too.

if it's making a noise in park look at the exhaust pipe that travels over the cross member. That pipe has a tendency to hit the cross member and rattle and bang around. If it is hitting, place a jack under the cat and jack it up till the pipe is not touching the cross member. Then take for a spin and see what other sounds there might be.

The t-case shouldnt make any noise with the vehicle in park (nothing is spinning unless the transmission is spinning the output shaft).
I honestly would get an assessment from a good local shop and go from there, it really doesn't sound like a failed transfer case to me
Here are some t-case options. A used one should go for $75-$100 or so

EDIT:
Also, the 231 and 242 transfer cases are really not picky on lubrication. ATF +4, Dex III, 10w40 - all of them should "sound" the same in there.
If you don't have enough cash to buy the t-case locally, one option is to buy it on eBay or from a used/recycled parts distributor and use a credit card to finance the purchase.
