Ok,

So I've been trying to find a used hitch for my 98. Is there any way to know what hitches fit what year models and makes? Is there a chart somewhere? I've seen some that came off earlier and/or later models, but I don't know if they would fit.

The unibody of every Jeep Cherokee from 1984 until 2001 is the same. Every Jeep Cherokee hitch will fit the unibody just fine.

The only problem you might have is the rear bumper. I picked mine off a 1989 Jeep Cherokee and put it on my 1999. The hitch was just a little too big for the newer-style rear bumper because the older-style bumper was apparently much further out, so I trimmed a little bit of the front of the hitch to make it fit. It bolted in just fine and I didn't have to scar my Jeep. Additionally, it tows perfectly. I didn't grind off any welds, just a small part of the lip of steel beyond the hitch part.

 

So will a tow hitch from a 1997 Wj fit my 1996 XJ?
