Jeep is still a better platform.

Better motor, more space, just as capable.

I know it's better. I guess I should ask "how much worse is a samurai"

Well, here on CherokeeForum.com, we're a little inclined to tell you it's a bad idea.

The Jeep is cooler.

Hard to find parts in the boneyard for a Sami compared to a Cherokee. The Cherokee is more practicle

Sammys are great platforms for tight mountain trails and rock. They are lite weight and have strong frames and can be built cheap. If you are looking for a trail only rig the Sammy is a good pick, but if you want a trail/highway rig the Cherokee is the way to go hands down.

I own a 98 XJ and a 86 Samurai. Love em both. If this is your daily driver, then def. stick with the XJ. That Sami looks beat as well. If you want to move to a Samurai sell the XJ and buy 1. They usually are easy to find anywhere. The things he has done to his hasn't really cost much. Samurai stuff is CHEAP compared to Jeep stuff. I love my Sami but I wouldn't let it be my only vehicle.
Here is my Samurai:

I have MAYBE $2k in it including the Samurai. Only thing I need to do at this point is get some transfer case gears which'll run around $450. After that this little machine will go anywhere those overpriced rigs will go.

With a Samurai anything over 33" tires really needs a new power plant and axles. I run 32"s currently and it is a dog, once I slap the transfer case gears in, things will be better. I don't plan on going any bigger though.
