What is the correct procedure for towing a 91 xj 231 tcase manual ax15 4wd? I towed my 94 auto aw4 231 tcase 4wd with the tcase in neutral and trans in park. Would I put the tcase in neutral and leave the trans in neutral for the 91?

I have the owners manual for the 99 and 94 but I heard that some of the early np231s are picky. There is also conflicting info about how to tow Cherokees in general. Some people say you have to disconnect the rear shaft but that is not anywhere in my owner's manuals.

Will the 94 owner's manual for manual transmission towing apply to the 91?

I would rather to disconnect the rear driveshaft for a peace of mind. Only 4 bolts on the pinion yoke, and tie the driveshaft somewhere safe

Transfer case in neutral and manual trans in a forward gear.

They were made to be towed as the transfer case has an oil pump driven by the output shaft.

The cherokee I looked at was a rusted, mudded, dented, pos. I would be ashamed to have tried to sell such a rusted vehicle outside of the rust belt. Search for the 5 speed still continues.

I am looking for an answer to this question. I need to dolly my 91 AX5 NP231 from central California to Northern Oregon and cant seem to get a straight answer via past threads.

Go on UHaul, or call them, they rent the Dolly's, they know the proper procedure for most vehicles. I know when I was going to use one, they said to disconnect the driveshaft. Ended up renting their car trailer for only 10 bucks more so I never ended up using one

Remove the rear driveshaft from the diff.

Duct tape around the u-joint caps to hold everything together.

Ratchet strap the driveshaft up and pulled forward to something solid.
