Hi there! I just punchased a 94 Jeep Cherokee sport without giving it the inspection it needed because I am new to jeeps and I was way to excited to say no. It needs quite a bit of work done to it (brake lines, suspension, etc..) but before I put more money into it than I already have, im wondering if the rust it has on it is worth it? It's already got 304km on it so I thought I should consult with more experienced jeep owners before I sink more money into it.

 

Rear bumpstops are always rotted away like that--no biggie--just get new ones especially since it looks like it might be slightly lifted (maybe?) and on larger tires.

Hard to tell if gas tank is rotting bad or if the picture is making surface rust look worse.

Axles and shafts just look like typical surface rust--nothing some Chassis Saver or POR-15 couldn't freshen-up.

Floor pans look like the might be rotten in a number of places, but it's hard to tell without more photos.


What purpose did you buy it for? What are your goals?

 

I've seen ... and fixed ... worse! Have you pulled up your carpets? That will give you a pretty good idea of what needs to be fixed.

Go to Google Images and type in "Jeep Cherokee rust". You'll see that you're not alone!

 

Short answer to your question:

No, its not too much rust. Perhaps a couple of weak spots on the floor, but the major stuff looks pretty workable. The fuel tank may or may not give you some problems (hard to tell from the picture). But most of the worst of what you have shown is bolt-on type stuff that can be replaced, and likely will be replaced.

 

Thank you guys so much for your reply's!!! I'm going to be using it for a combination of daily driving and off-roading when I get the chance, the occasional tow but not very often. I can post more photos tomorrow. Thank you for putting my mind at ease a bit!

 

I see a lot of surface rust which is normal and nothing really.Like said those nasty spots above the axle are the bump stops that rotted off and i believe you can unbolt that piece.Only problem i see to me is the lack of a cat back exhaust system on it.

 

What year did they switch to a plastic gas tank?

 

I believe the plastic tank took over with the 97+ update (it also went to top loaded fuel module, instead of front).

 

The 97 and up have the plastic gas tank, I would replace the straps also.

 

Poke what's left of the bump stops with a screw driver, see if it goes through the metal. I can't tell from the picture how bad the rust behind the bump stops is. If it ate frame rail metal behind them, then you would have to weld some metal/support brackets to strengthen that part of the rails.
