Default too much backspacing?

is there such thing as too much backspacing? im looking to get a set of cragars soft 8s for my b-day and my dad told me to make sure its not too much backspacing.

i have a 97 zj with a 4.5 in lift. i had another member tell me not to get anything less then i think 3.75 because it will rub on my coils.

the rims im looking at have a 4in backspacing. do you think this is fine for my truck?

depends, what's the width of the tires you want on them?

4 inch will work with 10.5 inch wide tires keeping them somewhat inside your stock flares, while 12.5 or wider you would want 3.75. but of course will stick out a bit further.

so it all depends on how far you want them to stick out, but beware of your bylaws. unless you want to modify your flares accordingly.
but you don't want them to rub at full turn, this decreases your turning radius while on the trail. can be a bit of a pain if in tight trees, having to back up just to get around a rock or tree.

is this on a zj, or an xj?

I'm running 4 inch backspaced crager soft 8's on mine. You want LESS backspacing, not more. But remember, the further your wheels stick out, the harder it is on the wheel bearings. 4 inches seems to work great for most.
