I have always done it front to back and back crossed to front. I do it this way because it is how my dad taught me and since then, I have seen that method suggested in several manuals. Now, with some of the "directional" tires, you will either have to just rotate front to back and back to front on same side or take them to the tire shop and have them flip the tires on the rim so that way, you can do the "half-x" pattern.

I always go front to back without crossing any of them. Radial tires used to have a tendency to separate if you reversed their direction of rotation. Some brands will still separate.

I've always done front to back and then back x'd to the front with the spare put in the rotation as well. Reason people cross them is due to the extra wear on the fronts due to scrubbing while taking turns.

It all depends on if they're directional or not.
If your front end is up to par then it shouldn't matter if it's on the left or right.
I usually just swap front to back
