Don't forget to change your summer coolant, to winter antifreeze as well !!! I had a serious problem with this last year.
AND
I'm only in Penna. where it doesn't get that cold..

is it just because of the denser compaction of air molecules?
Yeah something like that it is more of a hot vs cold air. You need to drain all the summer hot air out and replace with cold winter air, better traction and all.

Also, about the fall air, it is ok to use with the cinnomon but you might want to throw in a dash of nutmeg as well.

Troth, It's both. When you change all of your air with winter air that cold winter air will not expand like the summer air you removed. That's why you must adjust the PSI...but higher, not lower.

Don't forget in the winter season to use blinker fluid with antifreeze.

I was thinking my suspension was feeling a little spongy. I still have summer air in my tires. Will the colder winter air help stiffen it up?

Everyone here is forgetting the most basic neccesary fix for when winter rolls around for our XJ's. Remember to check that the pilot-light in your heater core is lit! Im sure noone wants to go around cold all winter. I just re-lit mine this morning. Be sure to change the wick as well, or the flame will just go back out.
