Well I finally broke down and changed my belt. I purchased a Gates belt online and it seemed like a pretty solid belt. Seemed to be more fiber and less rubber... I dont really know how to tell the difference between a good or bad belt. What I do know is it was a easy change. the easiest thing I have done to my Jeep so far, and I have changed plugs, oil, injector o-rings, IAC, cleaned TB and the list goes on. This was piece of cake, but what I found was pretty darn bad... check out the photos.

hahaha damn. That reminds me. I should replace mine, I have had the replacement for about 2-3 years. The belt on my jeep is about 5-6 years old. looked good the last time i checked it and it doesnt squeal but i just want to change it before it goes
I honestly have no idea how long this belt was on this jeep, but it was a Mopar...... maybe original. The only think I think the PO changed on this jeep was the plugs because it had autolite plugs and changed to Champions. I'm thinking about going back to the autolites because it idles a little rough after switching to the Champs.

Yeah it was time to change it for sure!!! if you didnt buy 2 of them, throw is under your back seat as a spare part for the "just in case" moments

I'd bet that 90% of the Serp belts out there are that bad or worse though. Belts have always been one of the last things people think to change, next to hoses. Not sure why considering how important they are.

Out of sight, out of mind. The people that you speak of are only worried about how the rig looks, not about how well it performs. Maintance first, then mods a good rule to live by.Originally Posted by 93gc40

HAHA When I changed mine there was steel belts sticking out. I think I threw it in the back, if I did I'll get a pic of it.
By the way... if you could not tell, those are two different places on the belt. That thing was full of cracks. I was a little worried about changing it because I remember how hard it used to be to change belts and it took two people to do it. This was super easy. Everyone should pop the hood and take a look. If its showing crack change it now.
I agree... Maintenance first... I have held off on the mods to get this thing running tip top.
