Default Thoughts on an 88'?

Been eyeing this 88 XJ on CL for about a week now. Doesn't look like it's sold yet. Maybe the seller is a member here?

Any pros/cons about an 88? Minus the luxury "bonus" of newer models, such as cup holders. This Jeep appears to be in better condition than my 98, body wise. Also it has fewer miles on the ol' 4.0. It is an Auto. Thoughts?

FYI he's asking 2.4k which I think is reasonable given what's been put into it.

I love my renix. That being said some people have major issues with them and how they work, I think it's a lot easier. If you do decide to go with it click the cruiser54's mostly renix tips in my sig. Or even do it now and see what some common issues are and if you are willing to do what it takes to fix them.

Good post. May take a while to read... Anything else I should know about the 88? What do you like/dislike about it? How is power compared to a 98-99? Do they come with the d44 rear axle?

Powers about a 20+/-hp difference, you'll have to look if it has a 44 that was an order and package item, you got the good transfer case(with FT4x4), shouldn't have a axle disco(bonus)

88 is the best Renix year imo. Last year that they were all AMC before the Chrysler takeover kicked in and they made any changes.

Nice and simple to work on, very few sensors, no CEL. Dana 44 came in SOME 87-90 XJs with the tow package, but not all. Only way to tell is crawl under and look.

Didn't even notice the Limited sticker. If it's in good shape I'd def pick it up, esp at that price.

i think 90 is the best year, only because the c101 connector is gone and they started coming out with the ax15 that year. pretty sure the dana 44 was not an option in 90 though. hopefully the one in the op's pic doesn't have the bendix 9 abs system!!!

What do you mean a good t case with full time? Both the 231 and 242 are great cases

Well the guy hasn't gotten back to my email, though it's still posted on CL. This was his posting...

"Up for sale is a 1988 jeep Cherokee limited, It has the 4.0l auto, 176,000mi. brand new 4.5 lift from rough country. Jeep is from Califonia and has NO rust or rot. this is its 1st winter up here. just replaced the front wheel bearings and relaced the u joint style axles with cv axles. had a flowmaster 40 series delta flow exuast just put on sounds great. Its a daily driver as of now and drives great for an older cherokee, It does have a couple things to tinker with but nothing drastic like the power window regulators on 2 doors are stuck up from age. everything drivetrain is mint and ready for the trail or drive down the road..."

I'll send him a text. I usually don't like people I don't know having my number. I will text him for more pictures, if it's even for sale. I would imagine a dealer probably snagged it already.
