Default Thinking of building a roof rack. need advice

I was looking through some of the threads of roof rack builds and I was wonder what are the dimensions that people used? Its main use will be for camping gear or to strap my canoe to it. I would like to be able to take it off in the winter so its easier to clean the snow off. I don't have a OEM roof rack so i am going to have to build it with rain rail mounts to prevent drilling into the roof. So my second question is what material should I use that is decently strong but light enough that Im not killing my back every time I take it off or put it on?

Climb up and make your own measurements. Put some of your camping gear up there and build it around that.

Not a bad idea. I didn't think of that. That might solve how long and how wide but what bout height? granted I know I can make it as big as I want but im just looking for what people usurally do.

Mines also 48x60 6" tall. I think the width is good but it you felt like it it could go longer.

I think your thread was the one that gave me the idea to try and build one. How heavy is yours?
Also I see some write ups of people using EMT tubing, can it be welded with a mig welder? I don't like the idea of screws holding the pipes together, thats just me tho.

Well if I had to guess probably.... 40-50 pounds. Emt is much lighter and easier to bend and whatnot. Its your call on it.

I saw somewhere a guy made a nice looking rack out of half inch conduit. Not sure of the strength tho lol
