4mpg? Totally worth it! Bring on the mud puddles.
I just want an SUV... not this, and not any of what you posted. Especially not with green wheels lol I really hope those were photoshopped

I never said that was at the wheels now did I? Is it a Jeep thing to put words in someone else's mouth? My mother taught me better. It's a lot more than 190 and 225 stock numbers on your side. Especially with nearly half the displacement and about half a ton lighter. And why assume my mother bought it for me? The military throws money at people, it's why I have a car and two motorcycles lol.

Floor pans, wheel wells, under carriage and other non-shiny spots for rust. Check. Now I've never driven a 4wd car that wasn't just a push button. How do I check to make sure that whole deal is in working order? And what is the proper way to shift from 2h to 4h and 4l? My exgf had a beat to hell dakota she used to have to put in reverse first then back into drive for the 4wd to work. And she also claimed I broke her power steering by gunning the truck in 4wd with the wheel turned... truth to that?

test drive probably. you shift by pulling or pushing the lever.
and the power steering broke because it was a Dodge

No idea about Dakotas (not sure if we even get them in the UK
)
but there are two kinds of 4WD you're likely to bump into.
NP242 and NP231
The 242 has a "Full Time" option which lets you drive on 4wd on hard surfaces (front and rear axles are free to move at different speeds, like an open diff). Ideal for use in unpredictable conditions on tarmac.
231 doesn't have Full Time so whenever your in 4WD the front and rear axles are locked to the same speed - driving in this mode on a normal road will kill your transfer case when you turn corners.
231 is reputed to be stronger for off-road abuse but I doubt that will matter to you
I have the 242, to test it you need to just take it through the modes. The lever is clunky and you go via part time to full time so do it in a straight line. You'll probably have to ease off the gas to get a smooth shift into 4WD and the tyres should all be the same type and inflation otherwise you can get some wind up in the transmission which will stop the shift from part time to full time. If that happens, just rock the throttle/brake gently or shift into neutral (on the main shifter) to free up the tension in the transfer case.
Don't shift into low range above about 4 mph, I always do it stationary, and don't forget the low range is part time on all Cherokees so don't go turning on pavement
erm.
hope that helps!

A jeep cherokee is not a performance car. It drives like a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail. If you want comfort and the ability to tow, you should get a pickup truck like a tacoma. It's smaller than a full size pickup but it can tow two bikes. And a word of advice. I wouldn't come onto this forum and make fun of wheeling since 99% of people on here go off roading. But if i were you i'd buy the 99 cause 00 and 01 had head issues.

If you're referring to the nonhelpful posters putting pictures of lowered Cherokees then yeah, it's pretty obvious. Gotta love how defensive people get when you have a difference of opinion. Tim Tebow forbid someone not have the same interests as you. Are there any members on this forum who are willing to be helpful to a potential casual Cherokee owner?

I'm no stranger to fast rides, and there is plenty of "performance" to have out of a jeep.

280>225. The Mustang and CBR, now that's what I'm talking about; pass on the others. Though I'm more of a literbike fan, love my ZX-10R. I wasn't making fun of wheeling, I was saying I'm not interested in it. You don't see me caring if you guys don't like knee dragging on a motorcycle because like I said "to each his own" and "to me, performance is handling" ... thanks to everyone who actually helped and isn't blinded by pride.

XJ are 4x4. That is for severe conditions traction. For speed and pavement pounding, an XJ may not be your best option. If this thread is a troll, then pic shows XJ executing trollmobiles in an honourable fashion.

go with the cleanest body... none of our opinions will matter since we would buy the one thats better for offroading. and as for cars, turning is for people who cant put in a good 1/4 mile time lol just givin ya **** bud. im a straight line 600 hp kind of guy. but coming from into the off road comunity i can say on a tough trail its a lot harder to drive than a road course drift course or drag strip.
