Default Thermostat?

Finally had the first morning of 32 degree weather driving the XJ I've had for 1 month. On the 15 mile drive to work the temp gauge never got above 120. I've seen that situation enough to know that most thermostats have a failsafe in that they stick open and not closed. So I pushed up the cooling system service ahead of all the other maintance I had planned. So what do I find when I removed the thermostat housing you ask??

Nothing a little JB Weld won't fix...

Bet your heater wasn't too effective that morning either, huh?!

Just curious, is it a Stant? I've noticed their "longevity" isn't quite up to par lately. Over the last 5 years, I've had Stant thermostats fail similarly in 3 different vehicles. Not fail open like they should, I mean they break the heck apart like yours did. Next time I'll buy a Gates or something else.

I want a three piece thermostat. I've only been able to find the one piece variety.

It's OE Chrysler probably installed at the factory in 2001. It's replacement is a Superstat from NAPA. I'll have to see how long it lasts but it will probably be replaced before 8 years. lol
