Default Tear off the VIN plate...and hike out.

After a recent real bad breakdown I got to wondering if anyone had to just give up, leave your jeep there, and hike out. Years ago while hiking up in the high sierra I came across a Forerunner that obviously a few years earlier was abandoned.

Fortunately for me, when the motor mount bracket bolts sheared I was near town and on a major road. The guy in the farm house right there helped me until after midnight getting the XJ back on the road. He had air tools and everything.

But I am sure this stuff happens in the back country.

How bad can it get?

I'd sleep in the jeep before I ever had to leave it in the woods over night again, let alone abandon it.

I was hiking once and I came across a cj7 that someone has previously wheeled and then got really stuck in an illegal wheeling area around the lake, so they stripped all the decent parts off of it and any identification and then burnt it. I found it the next day all burnt up and came to the conclusion myself that's what happened and didn't report it. Within a week some guys were wheeling and towed it out themselves.

I had a pathfinder some years back. Cracked the radiator left it and went back for it the next day. Was on the side of some local trails we have been riding for years Come back and all my windows we're smashed and my head unit was stolen. Oh and it rained the next day. Couldn't just break one window had to do them all.

Yup, that's what happens. Luckily, I still have my headunit.

We once came across that looked like it used to be a nice TJ on a fishing trip up at Ice House Reservoir outside Placerville. It was sitting on the side of a back trail up on tree stumps, pretty much completely stripped down. Looked like the owner busted open his T-Case and got stranded. Someone took virtually every single part you could possibly remove, and then proceeded to graffiti it all over. Rather sad to see, actually....
