Tandem as in dual rear axle?

it's dumb and wont benefit much at all, but will be alot of work for nothing.

You would either have to
A) Do a dual coil set up and cut the rear quaters
B) Shorten the wheel base drastically to fit everything under the stock frame
C) Extend the frame significantly to accomidiate the width of two rear tires and axles

knowing how impractical it would be? Nope.

I'd rather have a mid 90s 3500 CTD.

Why? The 3500 would have at least 2 times the load carrying capacity of the XJ.

with enough time and money, anything is possible. I have seen some tandem axle sport trucks (mazda b2300's) I would love to see a tandem axel XJ. but really I think it would be kinda dumb. (like the sport trucks I saw). Perhaps you could photo shop a picture so you know what it would look like B4 u put the money in it. But dont let the neigh sayers ruin ur idea. I say Go for it.

I agree that with enough time and money, almost anything can be achieved. There's a certain point at which you have to ask though "is this practical, is it worth the money I'm investing in it?"

For a unibody SUV such as an XJ, having tandem rear axles wouldn't make much sense.

On dump trucks, Semi Tractors, and other multi-rear-axle vehicles. They make a ton of sense because they significantly increase not only the traction but also the load carrying capability of those vehicles.

an XJ is so small and light, that the extra traction from a 2nd rear axle would add complications that would out-weigh the extra traction gained. And wouldn't increase the load carrying capability at all. A Ford 9" is plenty of rear axle to be able to carry the max load that anyone should ever carry in an XJ(like 1000lbs)

You shouldn't do it. You should conform to what others say is practical or smart. You must not express your individuality thru your XJ.

All kidding aside, I wouldn't do it but that's me. I would still enjoy seeing one and definitely would respect the time and effort put into it if it's done well. If you have the means and want to, then by all means go for it. It's all about what you want.

Just mount it right in the middle, under the B-pillar.

That may or may not be a serious suggestion.

Then you can wrap tank treads around the back two axles and make a half track!

And have a negative driveshaft angle.

The T-case output is right about at the B pillar.

GO FOR IT!!! like you said you only want to do it just to do it so dont listen to the people that are telling you all the benefits and draw backs and what not. i think if done well and cleanly it would look freakin BA!! there is a dodge 1500 at the school im goin to that has tandem axles and that thing is the shizzle. so in closing i think i would be awesome and if i had the money and knowledge to do it i sure as hell would just because i could!

did yalls parents never give you constructive criticism and tell you when what you were doing was not a great idea and that you'd be happier and better off doing B instead of A?

Would it be interesting? Absolutely.

However only someone who has extensive fabrication skills should even think of attempting something like this project. I WILL NOT encourage someone to do something where they would probably spend more than they wanted, get in over their head and end up disappointed with an uncompleted project.

I'm all about being different, but not when it involves doing things that are completely illogical.

People buy XJs to tow/carry heavy ****? That's dumb. A 6 wheeler would go over or through anything!
