Here it is.
High RPM Warning
Do not exceed 2500-3000 RPM for sustained periods of time when using the Low231 in low range.
Avoid high engine speeds when using the Low231 in low range in 4th or 5th gear with manual transmissions or with high gear automatics. This is common when driving in snow, mud, or sand. Because the gears are turning 50% faster and with the high gear ratio, it is possible for input speeds to reach 6500 RPM and cause damage to the transfer case.
We recommend using a lower gear in high-range for higher speeds rather than running the Low231 at extreme RPM’s.

Eh the rev limiter is pretty low in these. I believe its less harmful to rev It than strain it. But I wheel an auto and all the jeeps we race are autos. I would have to say hi or low range would be have less impact on a stick than an auto. a kid that used to wheel with us with an auto Cherokee would never use low range and I remember watching that thing stop in the mud with it to the floor and the wheels not even turning it would make me cringe. Maybe were comparing apples to oranges here.
Your suggesting the low wheel spin speed of 4lo is better for mud than the higher wheel speed of 4hi. That's the point of 4lo. Slow movement with maximum power.
Your suggesting this because you say you saw your friend, among other people, sitting stuck in the mud, unable to spin a tire.
I'm guessing the folks you saw were running open diffs, and were spinning the tires you didn't see.
With that said, too much wheel spin and you can dig in. Maybe also what your friends did.

No, I'm pretty sure we aren't.

And they probably had 35's on with stock gearing.....
