Hi all. I'm a new member from South Africa. I have a Cherokee 2.4 Diesel 2004 model. Recently the lock on my tailgate "stuck?". The glass lifts, but the tailgate won't open. I took her in to a dealer and apparently I need to replace it. The problem is that they want to charge me R10000.00(about $1100.00) ex labour. I would really like to do this myself, but can't figure out how to get the lock out while the gate is still closed. Can anyone give me advice or direct me to a site that can show me what to do?

 

Your Cherokee is called a Liberty in the US. Try searching Google for your problem using Liberty instead of Cherokee. This forum is for the 2001 and under Cherokees. Best of luck.

 

You're probably going I have to remove the interior plastic from the liftgate to gain access. I had a similar problem on my cherokee (xj) and that was how I accessed the lock.

 

X2, climb in there and pull off the plastic trim. From there you should be able to manually actuate the lock and diagnose why it's not working.
