Default Strapping a spare tire..

I have seen some spare tires in pictures ratchet strapped on roof racks/luggage racks. Have any of you guys had issues doing this? I have the Yakima (4 of them) roof racks and I would like to strap a spare tire on two on the top in the back, but don't want to run the risk of losinbg it on the road. Thanks..

Yakima makes a tire carrier that works with their baskets. And I would not put two on there cuz your jeep will be REALLY top heavy

I bought the yakima 'basketcase' roof basket for pretty cheap - it's smaller than a full safari rack and perfect for a spare if you are on 31's or smaller. Just strapped in with cargo straps and secured it through the rim with a bike lock attached to the basket.

I took it off after a while though - a spare on the roof is a bad idea if you ever actually have to use it.

Thanks guys. I agreee that a spare on the top would be a pain to get to. Clearance would be a killer also, I wouldn't be able to get the xj in the garage for repairs with the tire on top, but I need a spare and I have purchased new bumpers so I really don't want to go and a rear with a tire mount. I guess I could modify the one I have now..

Check out Detours bumpers for another possible solution. They offer a rear tire swing that works with stock rear bumpers. Not sure what you are running now, but it might work with what you have also. They have a good reputation for customer service and solidly built products.
