Default Stock Roof Rack

I tried to get the stock crossbeams off of the factory rails today, i figured if i slide them to the end and remove the endpiece (the one with the torx bit holding it) they would just slide off...

I tried removing the endpieces but they just SNAPPED in half. is this even the right way to get em off?

any input appreciated

The end caps that are attached to the rails. It looked like that was the only way cause the stock crossbeams dont bolt on or anything.
